BLOG: October is National Safe Work Month

At Lycopodium, we are taking the opportunity to remind all of our employees, contractors and visitors of the importance of safety in and around the workplace.

October is National Safe Work Month

Last year 191 Australians set off to work and never made it home again due to a work-related fatality.
That’s 191 fathers or mothers, sisters or brothers, sons or daughters killed at work.

It’s roughly 4 per week – one every workday except for Friday – take a moment to think about that.

About the impact it would have on your family.

About how every Australian should be able to go to work secure in the knowledge that they will return safe and sound.

Although that figure represents a 47% decrease from the peak of 2007, sadly it was a 5% increase on the year before. Men, in particular, are those most likely to suffer a fatal injury at work. In fact, men over the age of 55 are disproportionately – by as much as 5x – more likely than their younger colleagues to suffer a fatal workplace injury.

Our aim simply must be that nobody gets injured at work. Sure, accidents happen, but we must all take some responsibility for our environment and in helping keep it a safe place to work.

October is Safe Work Australia’s National Safe Work Month and the theme this year is ‘A moment is all it takes.’
Take a moment to look around you, to scan for hazards or to fix or report something that has been bothering you. Your #mysafetymoment might be all it takes to save a life or prevent an injury.

At Lycopodium, we are taking the opportunity to remind all of our employees, contractors and visitors of the importance of safety in and around the workplace.

The Lycopodium Safety Record

We recognise that much of the work undertaken by Lycopodium is often in higher-risk environments – mining, chemical engineering, construction, infrastructure – and make it a priority to provide the safest possible work environment for all involved. The group keeps detailed statistics on LTI (Lost Time Injuries) and TRI (Total Recordable Injuries) and is extremely proud to have recorded no more than 1 LTI over each of the past 4 calendar years and zero so far in 2018.

As part of the 2018 Annual HSE Goals and Targets set by Lycopodium Management, the decision was made to apply for international accreditation of the Lycopodium HSE Management System, a process which is well underway. We will update you all once that process reaches completion.
